Hi, I’m Cindy.
When I started working at Roses on Orcas Island, I knew two kinds of cheese: cheddar and Swiss.
The shop closed every January and reopened in February. I came on just as they were getting ready for the new season, when the cheese wheels needed cutting and John, one of the owners, decided to introduce me to 27 different cheeses.
Apparently, it was time I learned a thing or two.
I had no idea there was so much to know about cheese, or how much fun it could be to learn. What stayed with me wasn’t just the cheese, but having someone take the time to share what they knew.
Years later, I still think that’s one of the best things a little shop can offer.
I learned about wine, too. At first, when customers came in looking for a recommendation, they’d look right past me to John. He was tall, and even when I was the one helping, their eyes would find his.
Eventually, they started looking at me.
I spent years at Roses, learning about food and wine, getting to know customers, and discovering how much I loved helping people find something good.
When I left Orcas Island, I knew I wanted to create a place like that in West Seattle.
That’s how Delphinium Delicatessen came to be. A little neighborhood shop where you can ask questions, taste something unfamiliar, and discover a new favorite.
That same spirit is what I hope you’ll find in everyone who works here. My team and I want you to feel just as welcome to ask questions as I did all those years ago, maybe leave having discovered something you never knew you’d love.
You don’t have to know anything about cheese. I certainly didn’t.
